The situation
Attendance was a shared spreadsheet per department and an inbox full of approvals. Entitlement balances were maintained by hand, which meant they were correct on the day someone updated them and drifted afterwards. Anyone asking a cross-department question — how many people are away in this week, across these teams — was asking for an afternoon of work.
What was built
A full time and attendance platform, not a request form. The distinction matters: the requests are the easy part, and the entitlement arithmetic behind them is where spreadsheets fail.
- Absence and leave requests with a real approval chain, so an approval is a record rather than an email.
- Entitlement allocations tracked per employee and drawn down automatically as leave is approved.
- Home office recorded as its own category rather than smuggled in as something else.
- Hourly reporting, so time is measured at the granularity the business actually plans at.
- A team view that answers the cross-department question in a glance instead of an afternoon.
What changed
Balances that are correct continuously rather than on the day someone last updated the file, approvals that leave a trace, and a coverage question that can be answered while the person is still asking it.
